DIY IET Faraday® Challenge - Lighthouse keeper transfer
This Primary IET Faraday® DIY Challenge Challenge Day encourages students to consider how engineers work together to solve real-life problems. It enables students to experience the knowledge, understandings and skills engineers use within their work and the ways in which their strengths can be used to achieve an effective outcome.
The students will need to work as a team to design a way of getting lighthouse keepers back to the mainland from a lighthouse based on a small island 200 metres from the nearest land. The design will need to use a zip line to carry the keeper safely across the waves which can be high during storms.
The students will have access to the Faraday shop and a budget of Faraday money. They will need to plan what resources to buy and manage and record their budget. At times they may need to make decisions about affordability and effective use and should be encouraged to identify alternative, possibly cheaper, approaches to their final designs.
At the end of the challenge day students will be asked to present their prototypes by demonstrating how their design could carry the lighthouse keeper safely to the mainland.
Designed for six teams of six students (36 students in total) aged 8-11 years, the challenge encourages the development of students’ problem solving, team working and communication skills.

Blindfold maze KS1 maths game
Using directions to guide pupils through a table maze.
Clear instructions and correct vocabulary are important to ensure that the learners know how to complete the maze. This activity could be used as a starter or main activity to introduce geometry, position and direction.
The engineering context
When engineers program robots, they must be very clear in their instructions to avoid confusion. For example, the Mars Rover must follow very detailed instructions to help it move safely on the planet and send back pictures.

Dress up game - KS1 maths
A dress-the-model activity to work out how many combinations of clothes are possible
This is one of a set of resources developed to support the teaching of the primary national curriculum. They are designed to support the delivery of key topics within maths and science. This resource focusses on a dress-the-model activity to determine the number of wearing combinations possible with a set number of clothing items. It allows pupils to take a practical approach to applying multiplication.
This activity could be carried out as individuals or in pairs.
Learners can create a table showcasing the various combinations to organise their findings effectively. They may be guided through this process using the Dress-the-Model table slide as an example. This approach encourages students to analyse and present their results in a structured manner, enhancing their understanding of the activity’s outcomes.
The engineering context
Understanding combinations is essential in engineering, enabling engineers to optimise the production process and achieve the best cost outcomes. Chinese New Year: A red letter day
Making a beautiful red gift envelope for Chinese New Year.
In this activity students will learn about nets within a graphics project and will have an opportunity to use a net to make a Chinese red envelope.
During the New Year in China, it is traditional to give the gift of a bright, beautiful red envelope to your friends and family. In Chinese the red envelope is known as 紅包, hóngbāo) and the red colour symbolizes good luck and prosperity. Often the envelope contains money. The envelopes are often decorated with good luck symbols like happy children, beautiful clothing and a peach.

Christmas cracker jokes
Use a net to make a booklet, adding funny cracker jokes and designs to the pages where needed in this festive activity for kids.
This activity could be a main lesson to teach learners how to use nets to make useable objects. It could also be used as one of several activities within a wider scheme of learning focusing on understanding the use of nets in maths.
The testing of the jokes could be linked with learning in English, as they involve writing and oral expression of the cracker jokes.
This is one of a series of free STEM resources designed to allow learners to use Christmas themes to support the teaching of the primary National Curriculum. They are designed to support the delivery of key topics within maths and design and technology. This resource focuses on the use of a net to make a small booklet of funny cracker jokes, and these could be used as an alternative to the corny jokes often found in Christmas crackers!
Nets are important as they allow 3D objects to be made when folded.
Making the booklet:
Step 1 – Download the That’s a Cracker activity sheet. Identify the solid and dotted cutting lines.
Step 2 – Add the Christmas jokes.
Step 3 – ⚠ Safely cut out the booklet net using scissors.
Steps 4a and 4b – Fold the booklet as directed.
Step 5 – Now test out the jokes on friends!
As an optional extension activity, students could create and add their own designs and jokes to the booklet pages.
How long will this activity take?
This activity will take approximately 40-60 minutes to complete.
The engineering context
Engineers must regularly use mathematics knowledge and skills as part of their everyday job. They use nets to make scale models of buildings and other structures, as well as packaging for other products.
Suggested learning outcomes

Gingerbread man STEM challenge
Explore maths with gingerbread men, and find out how many combinations of buttons are possibilities. This is a simple maths game for KS1 and KS2 mathematics, as a curriculum mapped activity to do at school or home.
This activity in partnership with MEI is a ‘finding all possibilities’ type of problem. It encourages children to work systematically to ensure they know when all the solutions have been found, as well as ensuring they haven’t made any two gingerbread men look exactly the same. A strategy that will be promoted is the idea of fixing one of the variables, in this case one of the buttons, whilst changing the others in turn. To ensure they become confident talking about their maths, ask the children to work in pairs if possible in a classroom or at home.

In this engaging STEM activity, learners will design and make a place setting for a party or celebration. They will identify the items required, measure the space needed for themselves and the items, and use this information to design and make the place setting.

Maths tea party - fun maths game for kids
Position the tea party items into a square grid so that each row and column contains one of each
